In brief
  • Prestige beauty reached $17.1 billion in the first half, with skincare ahead of makeup on growth
  • Body, sun and natural formulas gained ground as shoppers built wider daily routines
  • Makeup dollars rose while units slipped, with lip liner, bronzer and blush as bright spots

Circana LLC said on August 11 that United States prestige beauty sales climbed 7 percent to 17.1 billion dollars in the first six months of 2026. Skincare led the gain at 9 percent, while makeup increased 3 percent and unit demand softened slightly.

Mass beauty also increased 7 percent in the half, to 39.2 billion dollars. Units stayed positive across prestige and mass. Buyers crossed price tiers and kept products that justified a regular slot.

For shoppers who track sell-through the way artists track wear time, the split tells a story. Prestige body care climbed 16 percent, helped by body cleansers, body lotions and deodorants. Sun care rose 19 percent as shoppers leaned toward preventative skincare. Face cream, facial cleanser and eye treatment each logged solid gains.

Skincare showed strength on volume as well as value. Units rose by double digits in prestige skincare. That result follows a 1 percent decline one year earlier, a shift that points to steadier daily care. Prestige makeup increased in dollars but declined in units, which signals softer volume health than skincare.

The plant story sits inside that shift. Natural skin care brands were back to dollar and unit growth in prestige for the first time in years in the first half of 2026. Ecommerce turned into the top channel for prestige skin care for the first time in the half. Together those changes favor considered formulas bought with attention and routines kept over time.

Larissa Jensen, global beauty industry advisor at Circana, said fragrance stays a route to affordable luxury and self expression while skincare gains from interest in whole body wellness, preventative treatments, and daily rituals. Her second observation also suits this reader. She said beauty still gains from shoppers moving across price tiers, choosing products that give the strongest emotional and functional value.

Other categories add background without shifting the lead. Prestige hair care increased 11 percent against the prior year, with treatments as the biggest growth driver. Prestige fragrance dollars rose 6 percent, with average prices up 5 percent while units held flat. Eau de parfum and perfume recorded double digit growth as shoppers traded up to higher concentration formats. Luxury fragrance, around 15 percent of total prestige fragrance, grew in dollars and units, driven mostly by womens fragrance buys.

A few cautions belong here. There are no absolute dollar sales for prestige skincare versus prestige makeup in the half. They do not reveal whether skincare gains came from new buyers, repeat purchase, or higher prices. Right now they provide neither third quarter results nor a full year outlook.

What to watch next is harvest shades scaled down for the vanity. If body care, sun care and facial staples keep pace, growth will still come from use rather than novelty. Lip liner led prestige makeup by growth, while bronzer and blush posted double digit gains. Those accents count, yet the field itself stays skincare.

Stay close to the routine and watch replenishment, not launches, for the next signal.
