In brief
  • FDA cleared bemotrizinol for US sunscreens, with sales starting around September 2026
  • The filter covers UVA and UVB while helping avobenzone stay stable through the day
  • US sunscreens list 17 actives while the EU lists more than 30

The Food and Drug Administration added bemotrizinol on June 9, 2026, and use at up to 6 percent becomes effective August 9, 2026. The move followed a proposed order dated December 12, 2025. For more than 20 years the US sunscreen monograph stayed unchanged while Europe listed more than 30 UV filters.

Anyone who wears SPF under makeup will feel this change first. Bemotrizinol shields against both ultraviolet A and B rays. In testing it keeps more than 90 percent of its protective capacity after extended sun exposure and can help stabilize other filters including avobenzone. At 627.8 g/mol it tends to stay on the skin surface, and the agency saw only low levels of absorption through skin.

The Food and Drug Administration calls bemotrizinol generally recognized as safe and effective for adults and children 6 months of age and older. DSM Nutritional Products LLC filed the request to list it at up to 6 percent. That cap will shape texture and wear, since bemotrizinol is allowed at 10 percent across the EU, UK, Korea, Australia, China, Brazil and India.

The filter has been on shelf across the European Union since 2000 and also in Australia, parts of Asia and Latin America for years. Before bemotrizinol the US list held 16 active sunscreen ingredients, with two deemed not generally recognized as safe and effective and rarely used. After bemotrizinol, the US total moved to 17, while the EU has cleared more than 30 UV filters.

Strong UVA protection, which guards against the rays linked to aging and dark spots, has been thin on US ingredient lists. Only two Food and Drug Administration approved ingredients give strong UVA protection, zinc oxide and avobenzone, while European makers can pick from 10 with strong UVA protection. An Environmental Working Group check of 51 products found only 35 percent met the EU standard while 94 percent would clear the current US standard. The EU advises UVA protection at least one third as strong as the SPF.

Bemotrizinol was the first new active ingredient added under the streamlined process set by the CARES Act, finalized within seven months of the proposed order. DSM Firmenich spent at least 18 million dollars across more than two decades in its drive to win approval. It has exclusive rights to sell bemotrizinol in the US for 18 months under the brand name Parsol Shield, with first products expected around September 2026.

HHS Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr said, Bemotrizinol has been used safely in Europe for decades, and FDA action will increase competition and consumer confidence in sunscreen products.

What is not known is when products with bemotrizinol will be widely available beyond the expected September start, and whether the agency will advance other pending filters such as bisoctrizole.

For now the routine stays the same, apply enough and reapply in sun, while daily formulas slowly gain a stronger base.
